Chanoyu Presentation at The Seattle Art Museum “Ryokusui-an tearoom”

The Seattle Art Museum (SAM), located in downtown Seattle, is home to an authentic Japanese tearoom called “Ryokusui-an.” At the museum’s invitation, the Seattle Special District presented a Chanoyu (Japanese tea ceremony) demonstration in this tearoom.

We began with a brief introduction to the history and spirit of Chanoyu and then presented an Omotesenke-style usucha (thin tea) demonstration. This was followed by an informal discussion about the tearoom setting, the hanging scroll, and matcha—its preparation, character, and how it differs from other teas.

With the worldwide interest in matcha, participants were very engaged and asked many thoughtful questions. The session became a warm, meaningful time to share the essence of Chanoyu—the simple yet profound act of welcoming guests with a bowl of tea.

シアトル美術館・茶室「翠水庵」で茶の湯デモンストレーション

シアトルの観光とビジネスの中心地・ダウンタウンに位置するシアトル美術館（通称 “SAM”）。世界各国の約25,000点以上の貴重な美術品を収蔵し、多くの人々に親しまれている美術館です。

このシアトル美術館には、小間の茶室「翠水庵」が併設されています。今回、SAMよりご依頼をいただき、シアトル特別地区として茶の湯プレゼンテーションを行いました。

当日は、茶の湯の成り立ちや千利休による茶道の大成についてご紹介したのち、表千家流の薄茶運び点前を実演いたしました。続いて懇談の時間を設け、掛物や茶室のしつらえ、抹茶の製法や特徴、紅茶・中国茶・日本茶との違いなどについてもお話ししました。

近年の世界的な抹茶ブームの影響もあり、参加された皆様は大変熱心で、活発な質疑応答が続きました。茶の湯への理解が深まる、和やかで充実したひとときとなりました。
