Chanoyu Presentation at the Seattle Art Museum "Ryokusuian" Tearoom

On February 21, 2026, the Omotesenke Domonkai USA Eastern Region, Seattle Special District, presented a Chanoyu (Japanese tea ceremony) program at the Ryokusuian Tearoom in the Seattle Art Museum (SAM) at the museum's invitation.

Located in the heart of downtown Seattle, the Seattle Art Museum is home to an outstanding collection of art from around the world. Within the museum is the authentic Japanese tearoom Ryokusuian, which serves as a unique venue for introducing Japanese culture, including Chanoyu.

During the one-hour presentation, visitors learned about the history of tea, its introduction to Japan, and the philosophy of Chanoyu as perfected by Sen no Rikyu. The program also featured a live demonstration of the Omotesenke-style preparation of usucha (thin tea).

Following the demonstration, an engaging question-and-answer session allowed participants to learn more about the history, etiquette, utensils, and spirit of Ichigo Ichie ("One Time, One Meeting"). For many attendees, this was their first experience with Chanoyu, and their genuine curiosity and thoughtful questions made the event especially rewarding.

The Seattle Special District will continue to share the beauty and spirit of Chanoyu while fostering greater appreciation of Japanese culture within the local community.

2026年2月21日、表千家同門会米国東部支部 シアトル特別地区は、シアトル美術館（Seattle Art Museum：SAM）のご依頼を受け、館内の茶室「翠水庵（Ryokusuian）」において茶の湯プレゼンテーションを開催いたしました。

シアトル美術館は、シアトルの中心部に位置する美術館で、世界各国の優れた美術作品を所蔵し、多くの来館者に親しまれています。また、館内には本格的な茶室「翠水庵」が設けられ、茶の湯をはじめとする日本文化を紹介する場としても活用されています。

当日は約1時間にわたり、お茶の葉の歴史や日本への伝来、千利休によって大成された茶の湯の精神についてご紹介した後、表千家流の薄茶点前の実演を行いました。

プレゼンテーション後には活発な質疑応答が行われ、茶の湯の歴史や作法、道具、一期一会の精神などについて多くの質問が寄せられました。参加者の多くは初めて茶の湯に触れる方々でしたが、終始熱心に耳を傾けてくださり、日本文化への高い関心が感じられる有意義な時間となりました。

シアトル特別地区では、これからも地域社会との交流を大切にしながら、茶の湯を通して日本文化の魅力を広く紹介してまいります。
