Mukai Garden founded by Issei pioneer B.D. Mukai in 1926 as a strawberry farm. Mukai Farm & Garden today is on the National Register of Historic places with its rare heritage home, Japanese Garden, and Fruit Plants. This Japanese doll festival tea gathering celebrates Vashon Island’s Japanese-American and the agrarian heritage. This event was open to the public and it was a beautiful warm early spring day. Japanese Hina Dolls were displayed and a bowl of tea was served with sweets in accordance with this occasion, altogether we served 42 guests.
ムカイファーム初のお雛様茶会 今回の会場となったムカイ・ファーム＆ガーデンは、1885年に大阪からカリフォルニア州を経てヴァション・アイランドに移住したムカイ一家が建設した住宅・庭園です。
1994年に米国の史跡に登録され、2016年にコミュニティの有志が運営する非営利団体 Friends of Mukai が買い取り、ヴァション・アイランドの日系人や農業の歴史、そして日本とアメリカの二つのコミュニティを称える場所として運営されています。
コロナ禍で全てのイベントや一般公開はしばらく中止になっていましたが、２月より日本文化の体験型イベントを定期的に開催されています。その一環として、今回こちらの住宅のリビングルームにおいて、雛飾り茶会を開催しました。一席６名のお客様に立礼でお茶を点てて、ひな祭りにちなんだ趣向のお茶会にいたしました。穏やかな春の１日、告知期間は短かったものの合計４２名の一般市民の方々にご参加いただきました。
