Tea Demonstration at the Morven Museum & Garden in Princeton, NJ

We hosted a tea ceremony event during the summer festival presented by the Princeton Symphony Orchestra on June 14.

The event took place at the Stockton Education Center, located on the beautiful grounds of Morven Museum & Garden in Princeton, NJ. We held two demonstration-style sessions, welcoming 25 guests each.

With the museum’s gardens in full seasonal bloom and a performance of Madama Butterfly scheduled for that evening, we designed the gathering around the theme of flowers and butterflies. At the center of the tea room was a hanging scroll inscribed with the phrase "Hana hiraku toki cho mizukara kitaru" (When flowers bloom, butterflies come naturally).

Guests enjoyed bowls of Usucha (thin matcha) paired with a traditional Japanese sweet named "Cho no Mai" (Dance of the Butterfly). We also introduced the history of the tea ceremony, tearoom etiquette, and how to enjoy sweets and tea. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture while experiencing the tea firsthand.

We received many thoughtful questions, reflecting the guests' high interest in the Way of Tea. Surrounded by the rich nature of the gardens and the vibrant anticipation of the opera, it was a truly meaningful occasion to share the beauty of traditional Japanese tea culture with so many people.

6月14日、プリンストン・シンフォニー・オーケストラ主催の夏のイベントにおいて、茶会を開催いたしました。

会場となったStockton Education Centerは、ニュージャージー州プリンストンのMorven Museum & Garden の敷地内にあり、各回25名の参加者を迎え、デモンストレーション形式の茶会を2回開催いたしました。

美術館の庭園には季節の美しい花々が咲き誇り、また当日の夕方には Madama Butterfly の公演が予定されていたことから、「花開蝶自来」のお軸を中心に、花や蝶をテーマとした趣向で皆様をお迎えいたしました。

来場された皆様には、和菓子「蝶の舞」と薄茶をお楽しみいただきました。また、茶道の歴史や茶室での作法、和菓子のいただき方、お茶の飲み方などについてもご紹介し、実際に薄茶を味わいながら日本文化への理解を深めていただく機会となりました。

参加者の皆様からは多くのご質問をいただき、茶道への高い関心を感じることができました。庭園の豊かな自然とオペラの華やかな雰囲気に包まれる中、日本の伝統文化である茶道の魅力を多くの方々にご紹介することができた、意義深いひとときとなりました。
