We gave a flower arrangement for tea (chabana) lecture comparing the flower arrangement in a tearoom, and the art of Japanese flower arranging called Ikebana. We specifically covered how to select flowers and vases based on the season and occasion.
Many ikebanaists in the US have never seen a flower arrangement in a tearoom before. We showed them one flower arrangement on the alcove floor and another on the tokobashira (a hook on central alcove pillar) and finally one in the middle of the alcove wall. After the lecture and demonstration on chanoyu, we served sweets (higashi and omogashi) and tea to the attendees.
We were delighted to be able to demonstrate chabana in a tearoom and very pleased when one of the ikenanists stated, "It's such a pleasure to see how you create such beauty with simplicity in chabana."
