Chanoyu Presentation at the Seattle Art Museum “Ryokusuian” Tearoom

The Seattle Art Museum, affectionately known as “SAM,” is located in the heart of downtown Seattle—an area rich in business and tourism. The museum is well known for its extensive collection of artworks from around the world, including Asian, Western, and African art.

At the invitation of SAM, the Omotesenke Seattle Special District held a Chanoyu (tea ceremony) presentation inside the museum’s tearoom, Ryokusuian.

During the one-hour session, visitors learned about the origin and history of tea leaves, the philosophy of Chanoyu as established by Sen no Rikyu, and enjoyed a live demonstration of the Omotesenke-style thin tea service.

The audience showed great interest and asked many thoughtful questions throughout the presentation. For many attendees, this was their first experience of Chanoyu. It became a meaningful opportunity to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture and aesthetics.

The Seattle Special District hopes to continue sharing the spirit and beauty of Chanoyu with the broader community through future presentations like this.

シアトル美術館（Seattle Art Museum）は、ビジネスと観光の中心地であるシアトルのダウンタウンに位置し、東洋美術・西洋美術・アフリカ美術など、世界各地の多彩な美術品を所蔵しています。地元では親しみを込めて「SAM（サム）」の愛称で呼ばれ、多くの人々に愛されている美術館です。

このたび、表千家シアトル特別地区は、SAMのご依頼を受け、館内の茶室「翠水庵（Ryokusuian）」にて茶の湯プレゼンテーションを行いました。

当日は約1時間にわたり、来館者の皆さまにお茶の葉の由来や歴史の紹介から、千利休が大成した茶の湯の精神、そして表千家流の薄茶点前の実演をご覧いただきました。

プレゼンテーション後には、茶の湯に関する質問を多くいただき、参加者の皆さまが熱心に耳を傾けてくださったことが印象的でした。

多くの方にとって初めての茶の湯体験となりましたが、日本の伝統文化への理解と関心を深めていただける貴重な機会となりました。
