Event Date: 2/15/2022 Eastside Community School 8th grade Japanese language students came to our tearoom to study Chanoyu. They are supported by the Seattle Special district though one of our public outreach activities. This 2 day intensive Chanoyu class was held in our tearoom.
On the second day, they experienced a different setup in the tearoom than during their previous session. They received a short lecture on the history of Chanoyu and tea utensils. They sat in seiza in the tearoom, made a bowl of matcha green tea, and drank it. This was followed by a Q&A session. Each student made a short comment or asked a question. While waiting their turn, half of the students sketched tea utencils. It was clear to me that the students enjoyed the experience.
Back in their home classroom, each student completed their artwork and a summary of their experience with Chanoyu, which were mounted in a panel. You can see artwork from five of the students below. Quite impresstive! We heard from their teachers that this was a great opportunity for the students to experienced authentic Japanese culture in the USA. We also felt it was very succusful.
シアトル特別地区として登録している学校茶道校「イーストサイド コミュニティー校 」（旧スリーシーダーズウォルドルフ校）の８年生（日本の中学２年生相当）の皆さんに茶室において、２日間に分けて各２時限の茶の湯の集中授業を受けてもらいました。その２日目です。
１０人ずつの二つのグループに分かれ、課題として「・お茶室で実際に自らがお茶を点て自服する。 ・お茶室や茶の湯のことを質問してみる。 ・お茶道具のスケッチを完成まで進める。 ・二日間の印象をまとめて感想文を作成して、提出する。」としました。
そして１９名の生徒全員は、茶道具のスケッチと茶の湯の自分が学んだことの感想を交えて、各々が１枚のパネルを完成しました。 写真はそのうち５人の生徒の完成品です。
また、今回の二日間の授業ではご担当の先生方と、学生たちの移動にご協力いただいた学校職員の方々にも学生の皆さんと一緒にご参加いただきました。同じように体験された上で、今回のカリキュラムにはとても好感を持っていただけ、来学期もぜひ継続してほしいとのご講評をいただきました。 今後も学校茶道への取り組みを広げていけたらと感じます。
