Tea Demonstration at the Georgian Court University at Lakewood, NJ

We hosted a demonstration of the Japanese tea ceremony at a teahouse of Georgian Court University. 

After giving a brief introduction to the tea ceremony, we invited 2-3 guests to step inside the teahouse and experience the proper etiquette to enjoy Japanese sweets and matcha. 

Also explained about Wakei-seijaku—that is, the spirit of "Harmony," "Respect," "Purity," and "Tranquility"—among the series of actions and mindsets of Chanoyu.

We received many questions from the guests, making for a meaningful opportunity for exchange.

We appreciated to Dr. Gross the beautiful flowers from the campus garden for the tea ceremony, which are maintained with such meticulous care throughout the year, and Dr. Komagata for giving us the invaluable opportunity to introduce the Way of Tea to a total of 35 participants, including university, faculty, students, and members of the local community.

広大なキャンパス内に佇む茶室にて、茶道のデモンストレーションを行いました。はじめに茶道について簡単な紹介を行い、その後、2～3名のお客様に実際に茶室へお上がりいただき、和菓子や抹茶のいただき方をご体験いただきました。また、一連の所作や心構えの中に「和敬清寂」の精神が息づいていることについてもご説明いたしました。

当日は、大学関係者および地域にお住まいの一般の方々、計35名の皆様にご参加いただき、表千家の茶道文化をご紹介する機会となりました。

ご参加の皆様からは、「静かな時間を過ごすことができた」「茶道について多くの新しい学びがあった」「このような環境の中でいただく和菓子や抹茶は格別であった」などのご感想をいただき、また多くのご質問も寄せられ、大変有意義な交流の場となりました。

常日頃より丁寧に維持・管理されている茶室および日本庭園に加え、当日はキャンパス内の美しい花々をご用意くださったDr. Gross様、ならびにDr. Komagata様には、このような貴重な機会を賜りましたこと、心より深く御礼申し上げます。
