Tea Ceremony Demonstration at the JP Humes Japanese Stroll Garden
On October 10, we held a tea ceremony demonstration and tea gathering at John. P. Humes Japanese Stroll Garden. Surrounded by the beautiful garden, carefully maintained by dedicated volunteers, about 20 guests gathered in the open tea room and quietly enjoyed tea and sweets in the gentle autumn breeze. With the spirit of ichigo ichie (one time, one meeting) in mind, we also introduced the tea utensils used in the ceremony. Through a hanging scroll featuring a haiku by Matsuo Basho and a “Shigure” tea bowl inspired by Hon’ami Koetsu’s style, we shared how the aesthetics of the Edo period continue to live on today.
We explained how the contrast and harmony between the flowing calligraphy and the solid, weighty tea bowl reflect the spirit of hospitality, as each item in the tea room is carefully chosen. Many guests were experiencing tea for the first time and asked questions about the utensils, movements, and clothing. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to learn more about Japanese culture.
10月10日、John.P.
