The Seattle Japanese Garden & Arboretum Foundation offers a series of Japanese culture lectures and cultural demonstrations every month from April to October. This season, the first lecture was “The History of Tea Ceremony” on April 4th at Tateuchi Community Hall at The Seattle Japanese Garden.
I gave a lecture on The History of Omotesenke, Rikyu’s Wabi-Sabi style of Chanoyu, the development of the custom of tea drinking, the variety of tea, and the health benefits of drinking matcha, etc, for 60 minutes and a Q & A session for 30 minutes. At the lecture hall, a scroll was hung, and tea utensils were displayed on a ryurei table. The audience was larger than expected and very enthusiastic.
シアトル日本庭園・コミュニティホールにおいて茶の湯講習会「The History of Tea Cremony 』
シアトル日本庭園を共同運営する林間財団のArboritum Foundation からのご依頼で、日本庭園・館内コミュニティホールにおいて一般市民の皆さんに茶の湯の講習会を開催いたしました。シアトル日本庭園では、一般市民への知的な好奇心を高める活動として、毎年４月から１０月毎月一回、市民講習会を開催しておられます。この講習会での開催テーマは様々で、幅広く市民との交流を図ることを目指しておられます。今年の第一回目として、「茶の湯の歴史」についてのテーマで講習を実施しました。お茶の歴史、千利休が大成した茶の湯、茶室やお茶の道具、様々なお茶、抹茶、抹茶の効能など、お茶の楽しみに興味関心を広げていただけることをテーマにしました。そして、茶の湯で使う道具や軸、抹茶、茶道具を扇面の立礼卓にディスプレイし、実際にご覧いただきながら、パワーポイントで60分のプレゼンテーションを行いました。終了後のQ&A は、30分間にたくさんの質問をいただき、お答えしました。日本の代表的な伝統文化である茶の湯にとても興味・関心を示していただいていることを実感いたしました。この次は日本庭園のお茶室でぜひお目にかかりたいですと、たくさんの皆さんにお声がけいただき、お茶の楽しさを感じていただけた市民講習会となりました。
