With late-spring fragrance in the air, University of Washington Chanoyu Club held The School Year End Tea Gathering at The Seattle Japanese Garden.
The first seating was for club members only. Two senior students who are going to graduate in June hosted the first seating. The second seating was for five invited guests, the club instructor, and the president of the club. The first guest was Ms. Maki Kawamura, Consulate General of Japan in Seattle; the second guest was Ms. Jessa Gerdner, of the Arboritum Foundation Seattle Japnese Garden; the third and fourth guests were from the Japan Foundation; the fifth guest was Ms. Kyoko Kizaki, a student's parent; the sixth guest was the club instructor; and the last guest was the club president.
Ms. Maki Kawamura gave a warm speech to the club members. We also received a congratulatory message from Dr. Ryuji Ueno, president of Omotesenke Domonkai Eastern Rigion, USA. The club members had a memorable day in the tearoom at the Seattle Japanese Garden, and befitting the occasion the scroll chosen for the day was Ichigo Ichie, which means "One meeting, One opportunity."
ワシントン大学茶の湯クラブ学年末茶
五月晴れのもと、シアトル日本庭園の茶室にて、学年度の締めくくりに、ワシントン大学茶の湯クラブが、学年度末茶会を開催しました。
まず一席目は、今年卒業の２名が亭主と半東になり、部員にお茶を振る舞いました。
そして、２席目は、初めて外部のお客様をお招きし、茶会を開催しました。この２席目は、新年度に引き継ぐ部員たちが、交代でそれそれのお客さまに点前座でお茶を点てました。部長は、高校時代から公共の文化イベントなどで、亭主の経験を何度もしていることから、お茶をお客様に点てて差し上げる経験を、ぜひ部員にも体験してもらいたいという部長の意向が、ここにはありました。部員たちには少々たどたどしいところもありましたが、お客様にたいへんあたたかく見守っていいただき、茶会を進めていくことができました。
このお席には、正客として、シアトル総領事館の川村真紀首席領事にご臨席いただき、さらに、茶会の終了後には、ご祝辞を頂戴いたしました。
上野隆司支部長からは、クラブ部員への激励のお言葉を頂戴しておりましたので、クラブ顧問が代読いたしました。この日の日本庭園での茶会は、参加者一同の心に残る貴重な「一期一会」の経験の記憶となったことと思います。
