“Experiencing Chanoyu” for Washington State Public School Teachers

The Seattle Special District hosted a Chanoyu (tea ceremony) experience for teachers from Washington State's public elementary, middle, and high schools participating in the U.S. Practical International Education Exchange Program, organized by the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Manabi Alliance.

Manabi Alliance promotes hands-on global learning for all. In July 2025, the organization will lead a program in Japan commemorating the 80th anniversary of the postwar era, facilitating on-site dialogue between Japanese and American educators. The tea ceremony experience was held in Seattle as part of their pre-departure cultural program.

A total of nine teachers and two accompanying staff members participated. They learned about the history of Chanoyu, the spirit of Sen Rikyu, the aesthetic elements of the tea room, and the meaning behind each movement in the tea-making process.

Participants expressed their appreciation for the ceremony's beauty and mindfulness, noting that it made them even more excited to visit Japan. The organizer also expressed warm gratitude for the experience.

Through this experience, we were honored to share a glimpse of Japanese tradition and hospitality, fostering mutual understanding and cultural exchange between educators of both nations.

米国公立校教師の皆さまへの茶の湯体験

シアトル特別地区では、501(c)(3)非営利団体マナビ・アライアンス主催「米国実践型国際教育交流研修会」に参加するワシントン州の公立小・中・高等学校の教師の皆さまを対象に、茶の湯体験会を開催しました。

マナビ・アライアンスは「すべての人に向けた実践型グローバル教育の推進」を理念としており、今年7月には戦後80周年を機に日米両国の教育現場をつなぐ研修を実施予定です。今回の茶の湯体験は、その訪日前プログラムとしてご依頼いただいたものです。

当日は、公立校の教師9名と関係者2名が参加され、茶の湯の歴史や千利休の精神、茶室の設え、点前の所作などを紹介しながら、日本文化の本質にふれるひとときを楽しんでいただきました。

参加者の皆さんからは「日本訪問がより楽しみになった」との声が多く寄せられ、主催者からも感謝のお言葉を頂戴しました。

この体験を通じて、参加された皆さまが日本文化への理解を深め、今後の日米教育交流の一助となることを願っています。
